Understanding Pet Surgery
Your pet should see a veterinarian at least once a year for an annual checkup. If your veterinarian notices something during this checkup, they may be referred to a specialist for advanced care. Occasionally, this care may be in the form of surgery.
Pet surgery is performed much like surgery on humans. First, you’ll learn about the specifics of the procedure. This is a great time to ask any questions, so you’re prepared to care for your pet after surgery is complete. Next, veterinary professionals may do Blood work, Radiographs(X-rays), and EKG on your pet to make sure they are healthy enough for surgery and to diagnose any underlying issues.
Once your pet is cleared for the procedure, they will be given anesthesia to help keep them under during the surgery. Then the veterinary surgeon will go to work. Once the surgery is complete, the animal will be brought into a room to rest and recover. Depending on the procedure, your pet may be able to go home shortly after the anesthesia has worn off. If they need to stay overnight to be monitored further, you will be able to call our office for an update at any hour, because we have veterinary technicians on duty around the clock.
What Types of Pet Surgeries Are Available?
At Westwood Regional Veterinary Hospital and Pompton Lakes Animal Hospital, we’re proud to offer many surgical procedures to help you and your pets feel comfortable again. Our offerings include:
Spaying and Neutering
These are two of the most common procedures performed at veterinary facilities. They help control the animal population and can be used to curb behavioral problems. Our professionals generally recommend spaying and neutering dogs and cats before they are six months old, but some specific breeds have different guidelines.
Orthopedic Surgery
Issues involving the musculoskeletal system will often be addressed through surgery. These conditions include torn ligaments, bone fractures, or joint disorders, but orthopedic surgery can also be used to correct congenital issues. This service is available at our Westwood facility.
CCL Repair
The cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) is our furry friends’ equivalent to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in humans. Tearing this ligament may require CCL/ACL repair surgery. The result is a renewed sense of mobility and strength in the legs, helping your pet get back to running and playing like they used to.
Soft Tissue Surgery
If your pet is suffering from an injury that is not related to their joints or bones, they may benefit from soft tissue surgery. This subset of surgeries includes oncological surgeries, skin reconstruction, ear, nose, and throat procedures, and more.
Emergency Surgery
When something urgent happens, you’ll be glad our Westwood location offers emergency surgery. Whether your pet needs a mass or foreign body removed or needs a laceration repaired, our team of trusted professionals can offer the appropriate care. We have four operating tables and a surgical suite available to get them prepped and ready to go into surgery right away.
Treatments for Other Conditions
Other services we provide include:
- Laser therapy
