Wellness & Preventive Care

Annual wellness exams evaluate your pet’s overall health, detect problems before they become serious, and keep them on track to living a long, healthy life. In addition, we provide a wide range of surgical services at our hospital, including spays and neuters, ruptured cruciate ligament repair, cystotomies (bladder stone removal), mass removals, and emergency services such as laceration repair and foreign body removal. Anesthetic protocols are custom to your pet’s particular needs.

Overview

The American Animal Hospital Association recommends that your pet have a wellness exam at least once every year. As your pet ages, they recommend having even more. We believe strongly in preventive care and have developed wellness protocols for every stage of the life of your pet. Depending on your pet’s life stage, vaccines may be administered, as well as disease screenings.

When should my pet visit the Westwood Regional Veterinary Hospital?

Preventative medicine is the best approach to keeping your pet friend healthy. This includes annual wellness examinations, vaccinations on a one- or three-year basis, external and internal parasite prevention, and dietary management.

Our doctors will help determine what vaccinations are appropriate according to you and your pet’s needs. We will discuss in detail what your options are to help you make the best possible health decisions for your pet.

How do wellness exams work?

During a wellness exam, our veterinary team will start out by taking your pet’s vital signs. Our veterinarian will perform a comprehensive examination of your pet.

This allows us to prevent major health issues from developing undetected and gives us the opportunity to analyze and record baseline values such as temperature, body condition, and lab work.

Dentistry

We recommend annual dental exams and cleanings to protect your pet from many health problems and help them maintain a healthy and clean mouth.

Westwood Regional Veterinary

Overview

Dental care for dogs and cats is an important part of their overall health plan. You know that when your teeth hurt, you hurt all over. More than 85% of dogs and cats over four years of age have some form of periodontal disease, which can lead to pain and tooth loss. It can also lead to bacterial infection that can spread throughout the bloodstream and damage the heart, liver, and kidneys.

Teeth Exams, Cleaning, and Polishing

Dog and cat dental cleanings are very similar to human dental cleanings, except that we are required to use anesthesia to properly and safely examine and clean the teeth. After the cleaning, our veterinarians perform a thorough oral exam and check for signs of disease like gum loss, root exposure, or pockets around the root.

Tooth Extractions / Minor Oral Surgery

We make every effort to save teeth that we feel have a chance to be successfully treated. In many circumstances, however, periodontal disease is so advanced that treatment without extraction is unsuccessful. Many teeth require oral surgery to safely remove each individual root.

This allows us to prevent major health issues from developing undetected and gives us the opportunity to analyze and record baseline values such as temperature, body condition, and lab work.

Vaccinations

Preventative care is an important aspect of maintaining your pet’s health. Proper vaccination is vital in protecting them against harmful diseases.

  • Rhinotracheitis
  • Calicivirus
  • Rabies
  • FIV
  • FIP

Canine Vaccination

WHAT ARE THE CORE VACCINATIONS?

  • Canine Parvovirus
  • Canine Distemper
  • Hepatitis
  • Rabies

  • Lyme vaccine

Overview

Preventative care is one of the most important aspects of maintaining your pet’s health. There are a variety of diseases that affect animals, so proper vaccination of your pet is vital in protecting them from the many types of illnesses to which they are susceptible to.

Why are vaccinations important?

Vaccines are administered through a subcutaneous injection (under the skin), orally, or intra-nasally, depending on the vaccine.

How are vaccines administered?

Many teeth require oral surgery to safely remove each individual root. We make every effort to save teeth that we feel have a chance to be successfully treated. In many circumstances, however, periodontal disease is so advanced that treatment without extraction is unsuccessful. We only extract teeth that in the doctor’s opinion are beyond saving.

Diagnostic Services

In-house diagnostic technology includes hematology and chemistry equipment, state-of-the-art digital radiography, cardiac and abdominal ultrasound capability, a microscope for skin and ear cytology and intestinal parasite evaluation, testing for Lyme, ana-plasma, heartworm, feline leukemia, and feline immunodeficiency virus, screening for pancreatitis, and blood pressure monitoring.

Diagnostic Ultrasound

An ultrasound is a handy tool when evaluating heart conditions, internal organs, cysts, and tumors and diagnosing pregnancy.

It can detect alterations in abdominal organs and assist in recognition of any cysts and tumors that may be present.

Many times, x-rays will often be utilized in combination with an ultrasound as they reveal the organ’s size, dimension, and position. With the ability for real-time monitoring, ultrasounds are helpful for pregnancy diagnosis and development monitoring.

Radiography

We’re equipped to perform routine radiography services to identify many types of illness or injury when pets are sick or suffer a trauma.

If your pet is sick or has suffered a trauma, x-rays provide a minimally invasive tool to help our doctors diagnose your pet. X-rays are also used in general wellness exams to diagnose potential problems before they become serious.

We use radiology alone or in conjunction with other diagnostic tools depending on the patient’s condition.

Laboratory Services

Diagnostic testing can identify problems your pet may be experiencing so that proper treatment can begin before a condition worsens.

Most laboratory work is done through routine wellness exams as directed by our doctors. In addition, our diagnostic lab will run various tests for emergencies or unscheduled visits to determine the best treatment for your pet.

We will then perform blood or urine tests to check their kidneys, liver, pancreas, and endocrine system. Based on your pet’s condition, we may recommend further diagnostic testing.

Allergies

Allergies can make life uncomfortable for your pet. Protect them from irritation with proper testing and treatment to relieve any symptoms.

Allergies such as skin, bacterial, and food sensitivities make life uncomfortable for your pet. Protect your cat, dog, or another animal from irritating allergies with a proper diagnosis.

With a proper diagnosis, we can implement a long-term treatment plan to help relieve symptoms and improve your pet’s quality of life. Every environment is unique, and every animal species and breed have its reactions to those environments.

Special Health Services & Therapy

Preventative care is an essential aspect of maintaining your pet’s health. In addition, proper vaccination is vital in protecting your pet against harmful diseases.

Endocrinology

Our pets contain a system of glands that work to secrete essential hormones that help regulate the functions of the body. These glands include the: thyroid gland, parathyroid gland, adrenal gland, pituitary gland, pancreas, ovaries, and testes.

The collection of these glands makes up our endocrine system, which plays a vital role in our health and happiness. In addition, our pets have a very similar endocrine system, making it easier for us to study and evaluate if they may suffer from an endocrine disorder.

A veterinary endocrinology study can be beneficial when combatting several diseases and disorders, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Hypothyroidism
  • Cushing’s disease
  • Addison’s disease

When the glands in your pet’s endocrine system secrete too many or too few hormones, their body will likely have a negative impact. The consequences could be severe if they are not diagnosed and treated on time.

Gastroenterology

We are committed to helping every pet owner find ways to manage their pet’s stomach and intestinal problems.

Gastrointestinal issues can come in various shapes and sizes, making diagnostic testing vitally crucial for your pet’s care. Our veterinarians will work with you to ensure your pet receives proper treatment to regain comfort in their life.

It is crucial to consider a gastroenterology work-up to diagnose and find the right treatment plan for your pet. Commonly diagnosed conditions related to gastroenterology include:

  • Gastroenteritis
  • Pancreatitis
  • Colitis
  • Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency
  • Small intestinal malabsorption

Piezoelectric Shock Wave Therapy

Shockwave therapy for dogs has shown positive results in improving bone healing, soft tissue damage, joint inflammation, and both the progression and pain of osteoarthritis. Conditions that can be effectively treated with shockwave therapy include:

Hip and Elbow dysplasia. Degenerative joint disease.

Shockwave therapy aids in healing by stimulating the body’s regeneration process. The waves work on a cellular level, releasing proteins that accelerate healing.

Shockwave is non-invasive so dogs are able to receive treatment with minimal recovery time.

A typical treatment lasts 5-10 minutes. Because there is non-invasive sound energy and deep tissue penetration, your pet will only require a short acting sedative. We do this to ensure optimal comfort and minimal distress.

Stem Cell Therapy

Stem cells are unspecialized cells capable of renewing themselves through cell division. Under certain conditions, they can become a specific tissue or organ cell. In many tissues, stem cells serve as an internal repair system, replacing damaged or dead tissues by reproducing and turning them into the needed cells.

There are two different kinds of stem cells: embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells. In veterinary medicine, adult stem cells can be found in all tissues in a pet’s body, including bone marrow and adipose (fat) tissue. Adult stem cells are capable of repair and regeneration of various tissues because they have the potential to differentiate into specialized cells of an organ.

Stem cells can differentiate into blood vessels, bones, cardiac, cartilage, fat, ligament, liver, muscle, nerve, and tendon tissue.

Stem cells can currently come from the bone marrow and fat (adipose) tissue in dogs, cats, and horses.

Surgery Services & Holistic & Therapy Services

Preventative care is an essential aspect of maintaining your pet’s health. In addition, proper vaccination is vital in protecting your pet against harmful diseases.

Soft Tissue Surgery

We perform soft tissue surgery for several medical reasons. Typically, joint surgery is used for almost anything non-joint or bone related.

Soft tissue surgery is non-joint or bone related and can include ear, nose, throat, cardio-thoracic, hepatic, gastrointestinal, urogenital, skin reconstructive, and oncological surgeries.

Our highly skilled doctors emphasize pain management to ensure your pet is safe and comfortable throughout the treatment process. We believe that keeping our patients safe and comfy before, during, and after surgery is of the most significant importance and an essential component of your pet’s care.

Spay & Neuter

Spaying or neutering your pet can help them live a longer, healthier life, minimize behavior problems, and help control the population of unwanted dogs and cats.

We recommend spaying or castrating small dogs and cats between 4-6 months of age. We often recommend delaying the surgery with large breed dogs until they are 6-12 months of age.

Why? To start, unspayed females are at a higher risk for mammary tumors and uterine infection (pyometra), which require very critical and costly surgery to remove.

As for male pets, unneutered males can develop behavior problems such as urinating in the house or spraying on the furniture, mounting people or objects; and aggressive tendencies making them less desirable companions.

Orthopedic Surgery

Orthopedic surgery can help pets who suffer from joint problems, torn ligaments, and broken bones and even help correct congenital issues.

Typical symptoms of an orthopedic disorder include difficulty getting up, favoring a leg intermittently when walking, limping – swelling in the leg, stiffness, or decreased activity level. If you notice any of these problems, you should take your pet to our facility for an examination.

Orthopedic surgery can help animals suffering from joint problems, torn ligaments, and broken bones and even help correct congenital issues. However, most orthopedic surgery focuses on the cranial cruciate ligament (CCL), sometimes called the Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL).

Laser Therapy

Laser therapy is a surgery-free, drug-free, noninvasive treatment to reduce pain and inflammation and speed healing. Veterinary laser therapy helps treat post-surgical pain and many acute and chronic conditions.

Therapy lasers are primarily used to reduce swelling and pain and speed healing. These mechanisms allow us to treat various conditions non-invasively and without drugs successfully.

Laser therapy can be administered without touching the area, providing immediate pain relief and edema control to sensitive tissues. We also use therapeutic lasers to stimulate muscle and acupuncture points painlessly, without needles, so your pet is as comfortable as possible.

We are committed to providing your furry friend the best possible laser therapy pet care with advanced equipment and progressive methodology.
